Cochlear implant, which is also known as the bionic ear, is an electronic hearing device that is surgically implanted to the ear which is designed to produce useful hearing sensations to a person with severe to profound nerve deafness.

What makes it different to hearing aid, whose main function is to just amplify sound, is that this cochlear implant directly stimulates any functioning auditory nerves inside the inner ear(cochlea) with an electric field.
