What is Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which can be developed to a person who are over-exposed to asbestos.

Do you know that many types of building products and insulation materials used in homes contains asbestos. Most insulation materials contain asbestos due to its heat resistance properties.

People who are working in companies that uses asbestos is in great danger and may develop mesothelioma cancer once the asbestos particles were inhaled. The family member who washed the clothes of a person who worked with asbestos can also be at risk for developing mesothelioma.

Asbestos is used in fire retardant coatings, ceiling and ceramic tiles, bricks, pipes and fireplace cement, acid resistant gaskets, pipe insulation, ceiling insulation, ironing board covers, fireproof drywall, wallpaper, flooring and roofing, lawn furniture, drywall joint compound and more.

Signs and Symptoms of Mesothelioma

A person who have been exposed to asbestos for a long period of time may experience one of the following mesothelioma symptoms;

- shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (pleural effusion is the fluid between the lung and the chest wall)
- chest wall pain
- weight loss

If you’ve been working in a company that uses asbestos and are experiencing any of these symptoms then it is advisable to visit your doctor immediately. Person who are suspected of having a mesothelioma cancer needs to undergo a chest X-ray, CT scan and biopsy in order to be diagnosed properly. Even if you’re still not xperiencing any of these symptoms it is still advisable to have a checkup from your doctor if you’ve been exposed to asbestos for a long time.
